As a non-profit institution, Southern Virginia University is not affiliated with, endorsed, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Rather, many members of the restored Church have come together to provide higher education in a faith-supportive environment closer to home for young Latter-day Saints in the eastern U.S.

Founded by Local Latter-day Saints

In 1996, a group of Latter-day Saints in Virginia led by Glade M. Knight assumed responsibility for a local college and renewed it as a four-year, liberal arts college aligned with the gospel of Jesus Christ as taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
