Professional Track

AFROTC

The Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFROTC) is a 3-4 year educational program designed to provide the training required to become leaders and officers in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force while earning an undergraduate degree.

About AFROTC

The AFROTC program prepares cadets for service in the U.S. Air Force or U.S. Space Force in air, space, and cyberspace domains under the Department of the Air Force. Cadets that complete the AFROTC program may commission as second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force or, if selected, in the U.S. Space Force.

The AFROTC program teaches followership, team building, and leadership skills. Cadets will interact with senior military officials and government leaders, visit and tour Air Force Bases, participate in summer programs like freefall parachuting, gain flight hours, fly traditional and virtual reality simulators, and more. With over 40 career fields available, students can apply for scholarships, which can pay up to four years of full tuition and fees, provide money for books, and provide a monthly stipend.

Local Partnership with VMI

AFROTC is available to Southern Virginia University students through a partnership with Detachment 880 at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) in Lexington, VA, only six miles from the Southern Virginia University campus. More information, including information about scholarships, can be found at the Det 880 website.
