Open Rank Professor of English

Full-time

Southern Virginia University seeks applications for an Open Rank Professor of English to begin Fall 2026. This position includes teaching in the English major and Southern Virginia University’s Core. Core classes may include Classics of Western Literature, basic writing, college composition, and advanced writing. Faculty in the English program teach a variety of classes within the major. While all fields of specialty are invited to apply, faculty function as generalists in their teaching.

Responsibilities

• Teach literature and writing within and outside the major
• Develop and refine course material
• Advise and mentor students
• Fulfill faculty service assignments

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in English
• Teaching experience at the college level
• Strong communication skills and collegiality

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in English
• Evidence of excellent teaching
• Experience or interest in program administration
