Student Counseling Center Mental Health Counselor

Responsibilities
- Conduct psychosocial assessments for university students including diagnosis, treatment planning, and resource identification
- Provide therapeutic brief, time-limited, individual, couple, and group counseling
- Complete clinical documentation (IE clinical intakes, treatment plans, and case notes) within a timely manner
- Provide crisis interventions services in office and on campus, as necessary
- Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds
- Maintain highest levels of protection of student’s right to privacy regarding health care records, student records, and confidentiality
- Provide referrals for students to treatment providers in the community
- Remain current on clinical service delivery issues within the collegiate mental health field
- Engage in professional activities at the local and regional levels as needed
- Provide community outreach and program development activities on campus as called upon or assigned by the Dean of Students or Director of Student Wellness Center
- Coordinate care of clients with on- and off-campus medical and mental health providers as necessary
- Acquire and maintain professional license to practice independently in respective field of training
- Maintain a schedule with 75-80% of the counselor’s time in direct patient services and 20-25% engaged in indirect services
- Participate in a shared call schedule. Some duties and activities may occur after hours or on weekends depending on clinical or university needs
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, or Counseling/Clinical Psychology or related field and license or license eligibility in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Supervision towards independent licensure may be provided, but a fully licensed counselor is preferred
- Counseling experience required, with preference given to candidates with experience in a college/university counseling center setting
- Possess well-developed clinical assessment skills and high standards of ethical behavior
- Ability to work collaboratively with supervisors, the counseling team, and with other departments within the university
- Strong interpersonal skills and technological capabilities
- Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to multicultural issues
