Assistant Softball Coach

Part-time

Southern Virginia University (SVU) is seeking an Assistant Softball Coach. The Assistant Softball Coach will assist in recruiting and coaching student-athletes, reports to the Head Softball Coach, and supports the SVU mission as well as the ideals of the USA South Conference and the NCAA Division III athletic philosophy.

Responsibilities
  • Coaching
    • Assist in developing practice plans for the team, including infield/outfield, hitting, pitching, and catching.
    • Assist with game planning and strategies.
    • Assist, as needed, with securing travel arrangements and meals.
    • Maintain a positive relationship with student-athletes as they graduate and become alumni.
  • Recruiting
    • In coordination with the Head Coach, recruit potential student-athletes who align with the Softball program and SVU ideals.
    • Identify and recruit individuals who are competitive and demonstrate the potential to contribute to the program.
    • Regularly communicate with recruits throughout the recruiting process.
    • Attend recruiting events and venues to evaluate potential student-athletes.
    • Host recruits on campus and assist with their campus visit experience.
    • Help student-athletes transition into the university and Softball program.
  • Administration
    • Attend weekly coaching meetings and regular athletic staff meetings.
    • Provide input regarding program direction and needs.
    • Assist with administrative tasks as requested by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Department staff.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent experience.
  • Proven Coaching ability
  • Experience recruiting/retaining students in athletic and/or academic program settings
  • Strong knowledge of NCAA Softball rules.
  • Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Ability to operate a vehicle according to federal and state laws/regulations
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team committed toward Student-Athlete well-being
  • Good communication skills
  • Some overnight travel
  • Ability to plan and conduct softball camps, clinics and leagues, in coordination with the Head Coach
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with coaching pitchers at the elite club and/or collegiate level
  • 2 years playing or coaching at the collegiate level
