Visiting Assistant Professor of English

Southern Virginia University seeks a Visiting Assistant Professor of English with a primary responsibility for teaching Core Curriculum classes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an excellence in and passion for teaching first- and second-year undergraduates taking classes outside of their declared major. Experience with innovative teaching methods is preferred. Initial appointment is one year with the possibility for renewal and/or tenure-track appointment.

The typical teaching load is four courses per semester. Core courses are capped around 25 students, and the ideal candidate will be adept at working with students of various experience and academic preparation.

Southern Virginia University’s Core Curriculum is centered on a trio of courses in philosophy, literature, and American civics. These courses focus on teaching primary texts that introduce SVU’s students to key questions and works of humanistic study. The ideal candidate will be prepared to teach multiple sections of the literature course, demonstrating a fluency with, and an ability to guide students through, works like Homer’s Odyssey and Milton’s Paradise Lost. Qualifications to teach Core courses in non-Western humanities is also desirable. The ideal candidate will have at least an M.A. and preferably a Ph.D.
