Student Wellness Center Mental Health Counselor

Southern Virginia University anticipates an opening in the Student Wellness Center for Fall Semester 2019. The Wellness Center Clinician provides individual, couples and group counseling and crisis intervention services for SVU students utilizing brief therapy models. Successful Candidates will also be experienced providing treatment in crisis intervention and working with diverse populations. Counseling techniques will respond with sensitivity and confidentiality to the diverse needs of SVU students. Referral and resource information will be maintained as well as Wellness Center clinical records using a cloud-based HER/ERM. The individual may also assist with coordinating Disabilities and Accessibility Support Services. The position will likely start fall of 2019 and is contingent upon funding. The job may be filled as a 9 month (traditional school year) position.


  • Conduct psychosocial assessments for university students including diagnosis, treatment planning, and resource identification.
  • Provide therapeutic time-limited and solution-focused individual, couple, and group counseling.
  • Complete clinical documentation of clinical intakes, treatment plans, and case notes, within a timely manner.
  • Complete rotations as a Counselor on Duty (during normal working hours).
  • Provide crisis intervention services in office and on campus as necessary.
  • Function and communicate effectively and respectfully within the context of varying beliefs, behaviors, orientations, identities, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Maintain the highest level of protection of student’s right to privacy regarding health care record, student records, and confidentiality.
  • Provide referrals for students to treatment providers in the community.
  • Remain current on clinical service delivery issues within the collegiate mental health field.
  • Engage in professional activities at the local and regional levels.
  • Provide community outreach and program development activities on campus as called upon or assigned by Director of Wellness Center or Dean of Students.
  • Coordinate care of clients with on- and off-campus medical and mental health providers as necessary.
  • Acquire and maintain a professional license to practice independently in the respective field of training.
  • Participate in training activities of Counselor Trainees, Interns, and Residents.
  • Some duties and activities may occur after hours or on weekends depending upon clinical or university needs.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Counseling/Clinical Psychology or related field and license or license eligibility in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Supervision towards independent licensure may be provided. Counseling experience required, with preference given to candidates with experience in a college/university counseling center setting. A qualified candidate will possess well-developed clinical assessment skills and high standards of ethical behavior. Moreover, a qualified candidate will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with supervisors and subordinates and with other departments within the university. Strong interpersonal skills and technological capabilities are needed. Knowledge of developmental issues of college students and demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to multicultural issues required. Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience or training with disabilities services and are familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act as it relates to university students and their educational rights. A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the unique mission of Southern Virginia University is also required. The successful candidate must also successfully complete a background check.
