Assistant Professor of Music (Violin & Conducting)

Southern Virginia University invites applications for a full-time continuing-status–track position in Music, with a primary area in violin and a secondary area in conducting. The appointment will begin in August 2020 at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will demonstrate not only excellence in teaching and performing but also the desire and ability to contribute substantially to the growth and development of a music program responding to the practical educational needs of aspiring musicians within and without the music major.

Southern Virginia University is a private four-year undergraduate liberal-arts university offering the bachelor-of-arts degree. Duties:

  • To build an advanced string chamber orchestra and an advanced private violin studio.
  • To support and collaborate with the chamber-music program.
  • To teach courses in literature, pedagogy, and conducting, and as needed, in the music-major core.
  • To serve as an academic advisor in conjunction with the university’s faculty-based advising model.
  • To participate in faculty governance under the direction of the provost.

Qualifications:

  • A doctorate in music, though applicants with a master’s in music and commensurate experience may be considered.
  • Experience recruiting to a music ensemble and private music studio.
  • Conducting experience.
  • Preferably, college teaching experience.

  • Links to unedited video recordings of (1) violin performances of no less than two contrasting pieces, one of which should feature collaboration with at least one other musician, made within the last five years; and (2) a demonstration of the applicant’s conducting process and ability lasting no fewer than ten minutes.
