Dear Southern Virginia University Community,
As promised in President Wilcox’s letter on March 10, 2020, the University has continued to closely monitor the rapidly evolving situation surrounding COVID-19 (coronavirus).
Based on the continued escalation of the COVID-19 outbreak, and in alignment with decisions announced today by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Southern Virginia University will suspend face-to-face classroom meetings effective immediately and migrate all classes online to enable students to complete all credits for the current semester. In parallel, the University will begin taking steps to suspend normal campus operations by March 31.
We encourage all students to make arrangements to leave campus as soon as conveniently and safely possible. To give students time to arrange travel and prepare for this transition, we will take a three-day recess beginning Monday, March 16, before resuming classes online beginning Thursday, March 19. It is important to remember that normal campus operations will be suspended by the end of the month.
We will try to keep our campus open to students through March in order to maintain maximum flexibility for individual travel requirements. It is possible that further developments could necessitate closing campus sooner. Therefore, we encourage students to travel home as soon as they are safely able.
Although we are aware of no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus or in the local area, we are taking this preemptive step to protect the health, safety, and well-being of our campus and local community. If students need special attention due to their individual circumstances, please contact Dean Crowther at email@example.com.
Please watch for communications from the University in coming days regarding the migration to online classes, event schedules, student finances, housing logistics, and other related issues. Updates will be sent to your University email and posted online at svu.edu/covid-19.
Let’s remain calm and confident. Remember there is always opportunity in adversity. During this time of challenge, let’s remember to lift and love one another.
We’ll look forward to being together again soon!
Office of the President
