Athletic Training | Minor

Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of sport-related injuries and medical conditions.

About the Athletic Training Minor

Athletic trainers provide medical services to all types of patients, not just athletes, and can work in a variety of job settings. At Southern Virginia University, students in the Athletic Training minor combine classroom learning with clinical experiences and develop the critical thinking and communication skills necessary to evaluate and treat athletic injuries.

Students in the program are required to complete a clinical assignment per semester with one of the University’s sports teams for hands-on experiences working with athletes. The athletic training minor will also prepare students for admission into a master’s program in athletic training or employment in the healthcare field.

“The classes are smaller here, so students in Athletic Training are able to have an incredibly immersive experience and more one-on-one training and guidance during their learning. They get a really solid foundation in first aid knowledge and communication skills and they are able to take what they’ve learned here and use it to help others in their career.”
