Vice President of Student Life

Southern Virginia University invites applications for the Vice President of Student Life (VPSL). Reporting to the President, the VPSL is a key administrative position that leads the planning, management, evaluation, and improvement/innovation of the university’s student experience. The VPSL oversees several mission-critical areas of the university, including code of conduct adherence and enforcement, activities and clubs, crisis management and intervention, residence life, student engagement, counseling, and wellness.


The ideal candidate will bring leadership experience within student affairs: a demonstrated ability to identify and execute opportunities to improve the student experience, including fostering and advancing retention efforts; a record of collaborating effectively with campus stakeholders in the service of creating better outcomes for students; capacity to manage organizational change; dedication to student success and fostering a student-centered culture; the ability to engage others in developing and implementing a vision for student affairs; and a demonstrated success with belonging efforts.


Candidates with diverse professional experiences will be considered, although ideal candidates will have many of the following experiences, credentials, and leadership capabilities:


Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration or related field
  • At least five years of leadership experience in enrollment services, student retention, student affairs, student success, or academic advisement



Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree in Higher Education Administration or related field
  • Senior-level administrative experience in student affairs and/or higher education



Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  • A track record of effectively leveraging and enhancing resources and/or aligning services to meet students’ evolving needs.
  • A record of partnering with key campus stakeholders to enhance the student experience and support strong student outcomes.
  • The proven ability to lead and manage a team of skilled professionals effectively and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of the President’s senior staff.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication, problem-solving, decision-making, leadership, and supervisory skills, including the ability to work effectively with leaders of other teams.
  • Expertise and experience with data-informed decision-making.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in student affairs, student engagement, residential student management, and student wellness.
  • Forward-thinking, with the ability to anticipate potential issues, analyze problems, identify alternate solutions, and project the consequences of proposed actions.
  • Ability to synthesize information and implement recommendations in support of institutional goals.
  • Demonstrating sound judgment and integrity, particularly in crises or decision-making requiring a high degree of diplomacy.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to speak confidently and persuasively to various audiences, including students, parents, faculty, alumni, donors, staff, and trustees.
  • Understanding of the partnership between student affairs professionals and university faculty members and staff, with the ability to earn their trust and respect in furtherance of a shared commitment to student success.
