Scene Shop Carpenter

Part-time

Southern Virginia University seeks a part-time Scene Shop Carpenter starting immediately. The Scene Shop Carpenter fabricates scenery for live entertainment. Working closely with the Technical Director, the Carpenter’s primary responsibility will be to support the construction, finishing, installation, and strike of scenery for the Theatre Program and Fine and Performing Arts Division in the Performing Arts Center at Southern Virginia University. Additionally as time allows, this individual will be asked to contribute to other projects around campus that may not be directly related to the Fine and Performing Arts Division and other duties as deemed necessary.

Responsibilities

• They will read and interpret scale construction drawings to create cut lists and assist with material orders.
• They will construct scenic and properties pieces.
• They will perform quality control inspections of all constructed or modified pieces in order to ensure accuracy, safety, and quality.
• They will assemble & disassemble scenic and properties pieces and assist with the storage, organization, and transport of stock inventory.
• The carpenter is responsible for following scene shop safety procedures and for reinforcing them for students, as well as, following standard construction methods used to produce theatrical scenery.

Minimum Qualifications

• One -year experience in the fabrication of theatrical scenery or general carpentry.
• Familiarity with safe working practices in a fabrication shop.
• Able to read & interpret theatrical construction drawings.
• Willing to informally instruct students in the above practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1+ years previous experience as a scenic carpenter.
• 1+ years in a college/university theatre setting.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this position include significant physical activity, including repetitive hand motion, walking, bending, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, pulling/pushing, and heavy lifting. The work environment is a noisy and dusty, and includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to tools and machinery, and working on ladders.
