Head Athletic Trainer

Southern Virginia University is seeking to hire a talented and motivated Head Athletic Trainer to lead the university’s athletic training program. The Head Athletic Trainer will oversee injury prevention, rehabilitation, and general health and wellness support for student-athletes. This role requires strong leadership, adaptability, and attention to detail to ensure the highest level of care and safety for our athletic programs.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the athletic training staff, including hiring, scheduling, and professional development.
  • Conduct initial assessments of athletic injuries or illnesses and determine whether referral to a physician is necessary.
  • Provide first aid and emergency care when needed.
  • Oversee rehabilitation programs and assist student-athletes with recovery.
  • Evaluate and clear athletes for participation based on health assessments.
  • Develop and implement injury prevention programs.
  • Ensure proper use of equipment and provide instruction on injury prevention.
  • Educate coaches, athletes, and medical personnel on best practices for health and injury management.
  • Maintain accurate records of injuries, treatments, and rehabilitation progress.
  • Travel with teams to sporting events to provide on-site medical support.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • Nationally certified as an Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association – Board of Certification (NATA-BOC).
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Virginia as a Licensed Athletic Trainer.
  • CPR certification.
  • Strong understanding of injury treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience in collegiate athletic training preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred.
Physical Demands & Work Environment

Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods. Primarily an office/library environment with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
