Broadcast Specialist

Full-time

Southern Virginia University is seeking a skilled and motivated Broadcast Specialist to lead and execute the live broadcasting of athletics and campus events. This position plays a key role in shaping how the University shares its most exciting and meaningful moments with both internal and external audiences. Reporting to leadership within the Marketing Department, the Broadcast Specialist will oversee the planning, execution, and quality control of live-streamed events, while managing and mentoring a team of student workers and interns. This is a hands-on position that combines technical knowledge, team leadership, and creative problem-solving.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all aspects of live event broadcasting including athletics events, commencement, and other campus activities.
  • Supervise and train a team of student workers and interns to handle setup, camera operation, audio mixing, switching, live streaming, and post-event breakdown.
  • Operate or assist with technical aspects of live productions including switching, streaming, graphics, and troubleshooting on-site
  • Schedule crew coverage for events, ensuring appropriate staffing and student development opportunities.
  • Ensure the quality and reliability of all live streams across platforms.
  • Maintain and recommend upgrades for broadcasting equipment and software.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Media, Communications, Digital Media, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • 2+ years of experience in live event production or sports broadcasting.
  • Proficiency with broadcast tools such as video switchers (e.g. Blackmagic ATEM), streaming software (OBS, Wirecast, vMix), and camera/audio systems.
  • Strong understanding of YouTube Live, Vimeo, Hudl, or other streaming platforms.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and time management skills.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends based on athletic and university event schedules.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience at the collegiate or professional level in live event production or sports broadcasting.
  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring student teams or interns.
  • Knowledge of copyright, licensing, or NCAA broadcast regulations.
