Signing Up

Students will need to sign up on the MySVU Travel Study page. Simply fill out the form and the Travel Study Office will contact you when your intent has been received. While signing up, you will be asked to pay a $200 deposit to ensure your spot on the trip.



In order to complete your registration, you will also need to register for the course you will be taking through your program. To sign up, either visit the Registrar’s Office on the first floor of Main Hall or register online through MySVU as you would for your regular courses.

After signing up on MySVU and registering for your course students will need to fill out a Travel Study Application packet and return it to the Travel Study Office in Main 221.

Meet with the Trip Director or Advisor to determine which classes they will be offering, then log onto MySVU, find the semester when the course is offered, and enroll in the appropriate classes. If you experience any difficulty signing up, contact either the Registrar’s Office or the Travel Study Department directly.

Yes! As long as the terms and travel dates don’t overlap, feel free to sign up for any program!

Canceling students must fill out an online Cancellation Form on the MySVU Travel Study page and return it to the Travel Study Office. After filling out the form, the Travel Study Office will process your cancellation and contact you promptly.

Students will hear from us by email within a few days of signing up online.

Non-students are welcome to apply for spots not taken by students, who have first preference. Simply fill out the Continuing Education Form and return to the Travel Study Office. Non-students must still apply and be accepted as part time students or continuing education students at Southern Virginia and must take courses associated with their program.

Passports and Visas

Students who plan to travel outside of the United States will need a passport. If you do not have a passport, visit the U.S. Department of State website to get started. If you are an international student, contact the Travel Study Office to know whether you will need a visa.

In most cases you will have no difficulty traveling with our groups. Please come by the Travel Study Office for more information.

Cost

Tuition for Summer Term travel programs is billed separately from the program cost. In addition, books are assigned by professors and purchased separately.

All federal financial aid can be applied to Travel Study.

Southern Virginia offers a Travel Study Voucher to all full-time students who have completed 56 credit hours at Southern Virginia. The voucher discounts the cost of any Travel Study program, domestic or foreign, by $400.

Program costs cover all transportation, lodging and entrance fees associated with your trip. Other inclusions depend on the program. Please see complete program descriptions for more information. As a note, program prices are tentative and will stay within ten percent of the listed cost.

General

Travel Study is available to all Southern Virginia University students in good standing.

Travel Study is an extension of Southern Virginia University’s academic mission of educating the whole person. All Travel Study is connected to an academic course and is for credit.

Approximately 15% percent of the student body participates in Travel Study each year.

Travel Study programs vary in size but rarely have more than 20 students.

Yes! Accommodations vary, so talk with your Trip Advisor or the Travel Study Office.

Although you must be with a buddy at all times during Travel Study, Trip Advisors will make sure you have ample free time when itineraries and safety issues allow.

You may make alternate return arrangements with the permission of the Travel Study Director.

Yes, all students participating in a Travel Study program will be enrolled in a prep course. This course will be for credit and will prepare you for your travel experience as well as introduce the course material.
