Philosophy Faculty

Southern Virginia University seeks applications for a full-time, continuing-status-track faculty position in philosophy to begin fall semester 2017. The successful applicant will be an excellent teacher of undergraduate philosophy majors and non-majors, an active scholar, a supportive colleague to faculty and staff, and an enthusiastic supporter of Southern Virginia’s mission. Women and members of U.S. racial minority groups are especially encouraged to apply.


Assistant or Associate Professor. Ph.D. in philosophy required. ABD applicants will be considered if there is convincing evidence that all Ph.D. requirements will be completed by August 28, 2017.


Open. The current philosophy faculty specializes in ancient Greek philosophy and early modern philosophy. It would welcome a colleague with strength in another area such as philosophy of mind, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, medieval philosophy, or Kant. No particular area of competence is required, however, since ability to engage undergraduate students in highly participatory and enlightening class sessions is a teaching quality valued more than AOS or AOC


12 credit hours per semester (4/4) and some senior thesis supervision. Only two or three preparations per semester are likely. Usual class size: 15–25 students. The successful candidate will teach two or three sections of LIB 110 Reason and the Self per semester. LIB 110 is required of all Southern Virginia students. It introduces basic logic and examines the nature of knowledge, mind, freedom, and morality through the writings of major figures such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Descartes, and Kant. The philosophy faculty jointly determines its syllabus. Summer teaching is available. Usual committee work.


December 1, 2016, with the review of applications to begin November 15. Initial interviews will be via Skype in December or January. Those chosen for interviews may be asked to submit sample syllabi or scholarly papers.
