Alan Whitehurst is a professor of computer science at Southern Virginia University.
Dr. Whitehurst joined the faculty in 2003. After graduating from Brigham Young University in 1983, he spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force assigned to the National Security Agency where he worked in counter intelligence and computer security. He then spent three years in the Computer Science Laboratory of Stanford Research Institute in Palo Alto, Calif. before returning to school to pursue a doctorate in software engineering and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Whitehurst has taught computer science and information science classes at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, at Brigham Young University and at the University of Phoenix. Dr. Whitehurst has also worked in industry as Vice President and/or Chief Technology Officer of several software development companies. Dr. Whitehurst’s research interests include software engineering methodologies, artificial intelligence, and distance learning.
Dr. Whitehurst and his wife Bonnie have 5 children.
