Kyle Nielsen is an assistant professor of music and Director of Choral Studies at Southern Virginia, where he conducts Bella Voce, Concert Chorale, and oversees the choral conducting internship program. He was last at Southern Virginia as a student from 2009-2012 where he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in both Music and Theatre.
Nielsen recently completed his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. While at Frost, he led the university Men’s Chorus Maelstrom, taught in the experiential music curriculum, directed marketing and recording services for the choral studies area, and was the assistant conductor for the internationally-acclaimed Frost Chorale. Nielsen also holds the Master of Music degree from East Carolina University in Choral Conducting as well as Vocal Performance and Pedagogy, where he maintained an active applied voice studio in addition to teaching group voice instruction courses and a variety of choral ensembles.
Professionally, Nielsen collaborates in a variety of capacities with some of the country’s leading vocal ensembles. He recently served as conducting fellow with Grammy-nominated professional choir Seraphic Fire for the 2016-2017 season. Additionally, Nielsen is the Artistic Coordinator for the Santa Fe Desert Chorale where he works directly with Artistic Director Joshua Habermann in coordinating all artistic contracting and operations, as well as supervising the artistic wing of the community outreach program. He also spent time as the Associate Conductor of the Master Chorale of South Florida during the 2014-2015 season, where he prepared the ensemble for performances with artists such as James Judd, Constantine Kitsopoulous, Eugene Kohn, and Andrea Bocelli.
From 2007-2009, Nielsen served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Illinois and Southeastern Iowa, and has since held numerous callings in the Church.
Nielsen and his wife, Tricia, live in Buena Vista, VA., with their two sons.
