Joe Bouchelle is the Dean of Students at Southern Virginia University.
He joined Southern Virginia University in 1997. He has served the university as an instructor of English and education, admissions officer, registrar and soccer coach. His women’s soccer team won the national small college championship in 1999, and he was named national coach of the year. His teams never placed lower than second in the nation at the national tournament. He is also the university’s advisor for the improvisational comedy troupe, “Shenanigans.”
Bouchelle graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the Virginia Military Institute in 1982. After serving in the United States Army for four years and attaining the rank of captain, he and his family moved to Seoul, Korea, where he taught and coached for three years at Seoul International School. There, he was inducted into the honorary teaching fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa. In 1989, his family returned to Va., where he taught at Fork Union Military Academy. At Fork Union, Bouchelle served as the yearbook and newspaper advisor and coached soccer, basketball and volleyball. While at Fork Union, he earned a master’s degree in English education from the University of Virginia.
In 1990, he was a fellow at the Central Virginia Writing Project. In 1996, he received the Lily Dabney Scholarship for the summer program in English Literature at Oxford University. He is a member of Sigma Tau Delta and Omicron Delta Kappa, international honor societies. In 1998- 99, he and his family led Southern Virginia’s exchange program with Liaoning Normal University in Dalian, China. He served as a visiting professor and advised the six students studying Chinese at LNU. He has since returned to China many times leading study abroad programs.
He recently completed a doctorate in higher education at the University of Virginia. His research interests are spirituality and leadership in higher education. He is active in community affairs and serves as a board member of the Rockbridge Area Relief Association. (RARA) He and his wife Sharlet have four wonderful children; one of which is a Southern Virginia graduate.
