Dr. Charley Bowen is the Vice President of Student Life and the psychology program coordinator. He joined Southern Virginia University in July, 2015 and has over 35 years of experience in various higher education
positions. Most recently he was a Professor of Leadership and Ethics in the Department of
Educational Leadership at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. He also served as Chair
of the Department of Educational Leadership for four years and as Dean of Students for
three years at Kennesaw State University.
Prior to his 14 years at Kennesaw State, he was Dean of Students and Vice President of
Student Affairs for ten years at Dalton State College in Dalton, Georgia. While in this
position he had numerous leadership roles in the Georgia College Personnel Association,
including president, and for one year was elected President of the Regents’ (for the state of Georgia) Advisory Committee on Student Affairs. Prior to his time in Dalton, he was the
Coordinator of the Graduate Program in School Psychology at Western Carolina
University where he also coached the men’s tennis team. He has over 50 presentations at
state, regional, national, and international conferences and several publications, mostly in the areas of leadership, ethics, and student life. He earned a B.A. in Psychology from
Mercer University, an M.A. in Psychology from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Florida State University.
Charley and his wife, Claire, are converts to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, having been baptized while he was in graduate school in Florida. He has been
blessed to learn from many callings in the Church, including twice as bishop. He and
Claire have five children and five grandchildren and reside in Buena Vista, Virginia.
