Chad Mahaffey has been the head athletic trainer at Southern Virginia University since 2005, overseeing athletic training for the university’s 17 athletic teams. He also is assistant men’s lacrosse coach and an adjunct instructor of physical education.
Mahaffey came to Southern Virginia from Brigham Young University where he served as a graduate assistant trainer for the Cougars’ 2004 track and field season. He also served as the first assistant athletic trainer for the BYU football team in 2003.
Prior to his time at BYU, Mahaffey gained athletic training experience working with several organizations, including the San Francisco 49ers (2003), the New York Jets (2002), the Utah Iron Man Triathlon (2001) and the Junior Olympics Volleyball Tournament (2001).
Mahaffey received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training and a master’s degree in sports medicine from BYU. He is certified in First Aid, CPR and AED, is a certified CPR/AED/First Aid instructor as well as a CPR Professional Rescuer instructor through the American Red Cross. He is also a certified member of the National Athletic Training Association, a licensed athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a Certified Graston Technician and a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner.
Chad Mahaffey and his wife, Michelle, reside in Buena Vista, Va., with their four children.
