Kimber Scholarship

This generous scholarship was created in honor of Mary Ann Kimber, an elementary school teacher, avid learner, strong proponent of education, lover of good books and a good story, mother, grandmother and an outward-facing woman of care and good deeds; a person whose life exemplified continuous learning and Christ-like service to others—particularly to children and families.

The scholarship recognizes incoming or continuing Southern Virginia University students whose activities, habits, characteristics, and aspirations demonstrate commitment to a life of learning and meaningful service (especially to children and youth) in their neighborhood, community, nation and home.

Amount

Two annual scholarships (one for a deserving female student, one for a deserving male student) of $10,000 per year ($5,000 per semester) plus a book stipend of $1,000 per year ($500 per semester).

The Mary Ann Kimber Lifetime Learning Scholarship replaces all other scholarships awarded by Southern Virginia University.

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to all incoming and continuing Southern Virginia University students, with the exception of direct descendants of Mary Ann Kimber.

Incoming freshmen must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.75 (unweighted) on a 4.0 scale to apply for the scholarship. Continuing undergraduate students must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 (unweighted) on a 4.0 scale.

Students should apply for the scholarship if their activities, habits, characteristics and aspirations demonstrate a commitment to a life of learning and meaningful service (especially to children and youth) in their neighborhood, community, nation and home.

Renewal

The Mary Ann Kimber Lifetime Learning Scholarship is an annual award; however, eligibility will be evaluated following fall semester of the award year to ensure that the student meets the minimum 3.5 GPA specified in the scholarship requirements. These criteria may be modified as jointly approved by the scholarship sponsors and the university.

Scholarship recipients may apply for renewal of the scholarship each year by submitting a new application form that confirms maintenance of the minimum GPA requirement during the existing scholarship year and details the recipient’s related experience and service during the same year.
