Applying for Aid

After acceptance to Southern Virginia University, students are encouraged to apply for financial aid to help pay for their education.

Every student who attends Southern Virginia has different financial circumstances. Though the process may vary, Student Financial Services has outlined five simple steps relevant for all students applying for financial aid.

File the FAFSA

File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine your eligibility for federal and state aid. Remember to enter Southern Virginia’s school code (003738) when prompted. If you do not intend to submit the FAFSA, please contact Student Financial Services at 540-261-8405 or at

Students may complete the 2017 – 2018 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016. You and your parents will use the financial information from your 2015 federal tax return.


Accept Your Financial Aid

Southern Virginia will provide you with an estimated Financial Aid Award Letter based on the results of your FAFSA. To accept your award, log in to the Finances portal in mySVU where you can accept, decline, or modify your financial awards.

Submit Required Documents

Choose Your Payment Plan

After completing the previous steps, you will be notified of the remaining balance on your student account. If your financial aid package does not cover your total expenses, you can settle the remaining balance with one of three payment plans.
