More than 1,000 alumni, students, faculty, staff, community members, graduates and their families gathered in front of historic Main Hall on Saturday for Southern Virginia University’s 149th Commencement exercises.
At the final forum of the 2016- 2017 academic year, this year’s scholarship recipients, graduating seniors and missionaries were recognized for their outstanding achievement. President Reed N. Wilcox also delivered a devotional address that highlighted what students should retain from this year.
On Saturday, Apr. 22, Southern Virginia University will host its 5th Annual Knight Run — a five-kilometer evening race through downtown Buena Vista. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are all invited to participated in this fun annual tradition.
From hundreds of other student applicants, Southern Virginia University senior and art major, Gustavo Ramos (’17), was one of six artists awarded the prestigious 2017 Anna Lee Stacey Scholarship from the National Cowboy Museum — an honor recognizing artists who represent a high standard of skill and knowledge in the classical study of form, color, drawing, painting, design, and technique. This distinction is reserved only for those artists who exhibit immense current talent while displaying dramatic progress in their work overtime.
Bruce L. Olsen, former global Managing Director of Public Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address graduates, faculty, staff, students, and friends of Southern Virginia University at the 2017 commencement exercises on Saturday, Apr. 29 at 10 a.m.
As part of the NCAA Division III Celebration Week, current and former student-athletes spoke at forum to gathered students, faculty and staff at Southern Virginia University. Joined by representatives from the “Be The Match” foundation, the student-athletes spoke on service and the relationship between athletics and success.
Southern Virginia University is delighted to welcome Sheri Dew to campus for a special all-school forum this Thursday, Apr. 6, at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center, as part of the Institute for Writing and Mass Media lecture series. To ensure everyone is able to attend, this Thursday, April 6, the 11 a.m. hour will follow a Friday class schedule, and Friday, April 7, the 11 a.m. hour will follow a Thursday class schedule.
On Mar. 24, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi held an induction ceremony for its newly established chapter at Southern Virginia University.
UPDATED MAR. 23, 4:15 P.M. — Due to the delayed timing of a major vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on health care legislation, Congressman Goodlatte needs to remain at the Capitol in Washington D.C. As a result, the previously scheduled Mar. 22 forum will be canceled. -- Congressman Bob Goodlatte, representative of the Sixth Congressional District of Virginia in the United States House of Representatives, will deliver a forum address to Southern Virginia University students, faculty and staff on Friday, March 22 at 11 a.m. in the Stoddard Center.
During a special devotional address at Southern Virginia University, Elder Mervyn B. Arnold, General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shared his testimony of a loving Father in Heaven and the Atonement of Jesus Christ with gathered students, staff, and faculty.
